Part 1: Course for Teachers
“Building communication skills to support motivation in learning environments”

30th April to 2nd May 2012

Part 2: Conference
“The role of dialogue as motivation in education”

3rd to 5th of May 2012

Encouraged by the connections in France and Germany at our events in 2010 and 2011, and an enthusiastic invitation from NVC organisers in Romania to host the next event, we have chosen a theme and are happy to present and invite you to our third annual event. The aim is to make it possible and affordable for teachers and educators in this region to join our network and learn together with us. This event is organized by NVC in Education Europe in collaboration with Babel Education.

Part 1 : Course for Teachers

30th April to 2nd May 2012

“Building communication skills to support motivation in learning environments”

led by trainers certified with CNVC

Marianne Göthlin, Louise Romain

This course addresses people who work in educational settings. We want to support teachers and trainers who are new to Nonviolent Communication (NVC) who want to learn more and who are interested in implementing NVC in their teaching. This course also serves those who wish to learn more about training teachers, in terms of both how and content. With two trainers, we adjust easily to different learning needs.

The aim of the course is for participants to:

  • practice how to implement NVC in daily teaching life
  • using NVC to dialogue and better understand students and colleagues
  • to develop skills which contribute to developing learning environments based on trust and co-operation supported by NVC skills

Participants will be able to practice and learn:

  • expressing honesty – clearly communicating your reasons for what you suggest
  • empathic listening – creating trust and understanding
  • self-care – balancing the care for others and yourself
  • handling conflicts and mediation between students
  • transforming resistance to cooperation
  • exploring alternatives to punishment and rewards

The course ends with exploring what we’ve enjoyed and planning “next steps” including team-building, networking, further learning, support teams

Marianne Göthlin, Sweden is particularly interested in sharing her in-depth NVC experience in education, with school staff and parents. Marianne has 12 years experience of running a school based on NVC values, serving as a trainer in many IITs.

Louise Romain, France, is known for her lively yet sensitive approach and focusing on inner transformation, Louise offers NVC public courses in Europe and Africa (University of Peace in Africa) plus coaching and mediation for individuals and couples.

Part 2 : Conference – open for NVC trainers and others engaged in educational development

3rd to 5th May 2012

“The role of dialogue as motivation in education”

We would like to bring together practitioners, teachers, NVC trainers and others engaged in educational development for an inspirational meeting. You might already be sharing NVC and want to benefit from hearing about the experiences of those who are currently working in this field.  Or you are curious and yet do not know about NVC and you will then be offered a NVC presentation.

We start the conference in the evening of the 3rd May with a light meal at 18h30 and an Introduction to NVC at 19h30.

The second day of the conference, 4th of May, you are invited to:

  • Hearing about the benefits of adapting NVC in your work in education
  • Learning from NVC experiences in schools/kindergartens/adult education institutions from various trainers
  • Exploring how to support educators in creating sustainable environments where inner motivation and unconditional recognition are nurtured

The third day of the conference, 5th of May, you are invited to:

  • Join with others who want to shift  from the culture of punishment and rewards as motivation and practice and explore alternatives
  • Meet other NVC practitioners who are eager to further explore and develop on-going resources to support NVC work within education
  • Space for exchange of best practice and networking

Contributors in the conference

Monica Diaconu, Babel Education, Romania
Hierarchy collapsing-chaos, community, humanity?
I would like to illustrate what factors have helped to shape a great learning community of teachers and learners in the context of a private language school in Timisoara and how NVC is playing a role in our attempts to deal with difference, dialogue, motivation.

Marianne Göthlin, teacher and trainer certified with CNVC, Sweden
I will share my experience on how teachers practicing NVC dialogue contribute to learning and wellbeing of their students. From my 20 years of using and sharing NVC in education I will report some major results and evaluations from long term projects.

Ian Peatey, an English trainer certified with CNVC based in Bucharest, Romania, with his wife and daughter. I will share a male perspective on what it is like to parent with Nonviolent Communication, the joys, the challenges and the constant effort of dealing with the gap between the more strict education style in which I was raised and the reward and punishment-free way promoted by Nonviolent Communication.

Robert Krzisnik, trainer certified with CNVC, Slovenia
“Teenagers are absolutely terrible!” is a common entry statement for teachers. Having three teenagers at home and working with students at colleges and universities, I find them inspiring and beautiful. It is not always easy, of course. So first I would like to explore specific values of the Generation Y and how these values came about. Then I will share some strategies and specific facilitative processes for sharing NVC or simply connecting with students in a way that makes the learning an enjoyable experience for everybody.

Ruxandra Popovici, Projects Manager – English and Education, British Council, Romania
I will present features of the projects for democratic citizenship and intercultural dialogue, implemented so far in Romanian schools, these two areas being central to British Council activity in Romania.

Monica Reu, trainer certified with CNVC, Romania
I will share my experience with introducing Nonviolent Communication in two Bucharest state schools and a parenting project that has been bringing me a lot of joy and a deep sense of fulfillment. “Empathic Education” is an NVC course dedicated to parents who, much like myself, would like to create with their children strong relationships based on mutual trust, understanding and empathy.

Louise Romain, trainer certified with CNVC, France
I would share about using NVC dialogue to make proposals/requests to school groups:
- how to make requests that are clear, do-able and in the present even when there may be 30 students involved.
- asking for agreement versus asking for objections
- using empathy to deal with objections
- how and when to measure whether or not a proposal is working

Penny Vine, trainer certified with CNVC, UK
I would love to share my experience of working with children in the early years [birth to 8]. I intend to share one powerful interaction I experienced with a young child – called Charlie. He taught me so ‘much about the role of motivation in education’. He will be joining me to re-play the experience for us to learn from.

This is Charlie. He’s 4 and will be 5 on the 4th May. He’s very excited as he’s not been to Romania before. “See you there” he says.

The conference ends with a piano concert by Mireille Heijltjes, Holland and dinner at 18:30.

Pricing: Our intention is to keep the second part of this week as a non-profit event with a contribution from each attendee to support costs associated with invited speakers and organisation.
